SANSA

The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) is the government body coordinating and promoting South Africa's space activities, established in 2010 and headquartered in Pretoria, consolidating previously separate government space functions under a unified national agency structure with facilities spanning multiple sites across the country.

SANSA operates the Space Weather Centre in Hermanus, Western Cape — one of the Southern Hemisphere's primary space weather monitoring stations — tracking solar activity, geomagnetic storm indices (K-index), and ionospheric conditions affecting satellite communications, navigation systems, and power grid stability. The Hermanus Magnetic Observatory is one of Africa's oldest continuously operating scientific stations, with geomagnetic monitoring records spanning over a century that provide invaluable long-baseline data for understanding Earth's magnetic field evolution.

The agency manages South Africa's participation in international space missions through the Hartebeesthoek Satellite Data Acquisition Station (HartRAO) near Johannesburg, which tracks and acquires data from satellites for ESA, NASA, and other international partners. HartRAO hosts a 26-meter radio telescope participating in Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) networks for precision geodesy and astrophysics. SANSA's Earth observation program provides satellite imagery for land use monitoring, disaster management, and environmental assessment across South Africa and the Southern African region.

SANSA participates in the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project — South Africa's MeerKAT radio telescope array in the Karoo region serves as SKA's Southern African precursor, with South Africa selected as the primary hosting nation for the SKA-Mid array representing a landmark international science investment.
