Satrec Initiative

Satrec Initiative (SaTReCI) is a Daejeon-based South Korean commercial satellite manufacturer founded in 1999 by the original engineering team that built KAIST's KITSAT-1, South Korea's first satellite launched in 1992. This heritage — direct experience designing, building, and operating satellites from scratch under Surrey Satellite Technology's mentorship — gives Satrec Initiative deep vertical integration capabilities that most satellite integrators lack.

The company's flagship product line is the SpaceEye high-resolution optical Earth observation satellite: SpaceEye-X achieved 50 cm panchromatic resolution from a compact 460 kg platform, competitive with much larger satellite systems. Satrec Initiative supplied the UAE's DubaiSat-1 (2009) and DubaiSat-2 (2013) satellites through a contract with MBRSC, establishing itself as a capable export satellite manufacturer. The company's SpaceEye-1 satellite, operated by SI Imaging Services (SIIS) — its commercial imagery subsidiary — provides 50 cm imagery commercially alongside DigitalGlobe/Maxar and Airbus Defence & Space products.

Satrec Initiative is developing the SpaceEye-T wide-area imaging constellation to provide frequent revisit global coverage for agriculture, infrastructure monitoring, and change detection applications. The company has also participated in ESA satellite programs and supplies subsystems including star trackers, reaction wheels, and mission-specific sensors to international prime contractors. Listed on KOSDAQ (086960), Satrec Initiative bridges government-funded Korean space program heritage with commercial satellite export ambitions, competing in a market where Airbus, Thales Alenia, and Israeli IAI dominate larger platforms.
