SaxaVord's geographic position at approximately 60°47'N latitude — farther north than anywhere in mainland Britain, above the Arctic Circle threshold — is its primary technical advantage. The extreme northern latitude allows rockets launched northward to reach sun-synchronous and polar orbits with minimal fuel expenditure, as the launch trajectory aligns naturally with the orbital plane without requiring costly plane-change maneuvers. Additionally, Shetland's location over the North Atlantic provides clean over-water ascent trajectories with no populated land masses in the launch corridor for hundreds of kilometers.

The spaceport is being developed to support multiple European small launch vehicle providers that lack their own dedicated launch sites: RFA (Rocket Factory Augsburg, Germany), Skyrora (Scotland), Orbex (Scotland), and HyImpulse (Germany) have all engaged with SaxaVord as a potential launch location. These companies are developing rockets in the sub-1000 kg LEO payload class for the growing European commercial smallsat market that currently relies on SpaceX Transporter rideshares or Vega-C rideshares rather than responsive dedicated launches.

SaxaVord is part of the UK Space Agency's strategy to build UK sovereign launch capability following Brexit's separation from ESA's Ariane launch access. The UK government invested in multiple UK spaceport developments (SaxaVord, Sutherland/Orbex, Spaceport Cornwall for horizontal launch), of which SaxaVord was first to receive operational licensing for vertical orbital launches.
