Founded in 1970 as the Société Commerciale de Réassurance (SCOR), the company operates globally with offices in over 30 countries and underwrites reinsurance across life, property, casualty, and specialty lines. The Aviation and Space unit sits within SCOR's P&C (property and casualty) specialty segment and provides reinsurance capacity to direct space insurers including AXA XL, Marsh, and broker-dealers that place satellite launch and in-orbit coverage. Space reinsurance is a technically demanding class: SCOR's underwriters specialize in satellite fleet accumulation modeling, distinguishing between systematic risks (component or software defects affecting an entire constellation) and random failure risks (individual satellite anomalies from component aging or micrometeorite strikes).

Mega-constellation coverage is a defining specialty — as operators like SpaceX (Starlink), Amazon (Kuiper), and OneWeb deploy hundreds to thousands of satellites, traditional per-satellite insurance structures become impractical, and SCOR has developed aggregate and per-event reinsurance structures that cap an insurer's total loss exposure across large fleets while providing meaningful protection against systemic events such as Kessler-cascade debris fields or solar energetic particle events causing simultaneous degradation across a constellation.

SCOR's space reinsurance team works with operators during constellation design phases to assess risk mitigation measures — orbital altitude selection, deorbit fuel reserves, redundant propulsion systems — that influence risk pricing. The unit participates in the Space industry working groups coordinated through Lloyd's of London and the International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) space committee to develop standardized policy language as the new space market evolves.
