Scout Space

Scout Space, founded in 2021 and based in the United States, develops hosted payload space domain awareness (SDA) sensors that ride as secondary payloads on commercial satellite buses — providing persistent in-orbit optical surveillance of the near-Earth space environment for the US Space Force, AFRL, commercial satellite operators, and government intelligence customers.

Scout Space's ORCA (Orbital Reconnaissance and Characterization Architecture) platform consists of compact optical sensors designed to be hosted on existing commercial or government satellites as secondary payloads, enabling space-based observations of resident space objects (RSOs) including other satellites, rocket bodies, and debris fragments. In-orbit optical sensors overcome fundamental limitations of ground-based radar and telescope networks: no weather interference, potentially persistent coverage of specific orbital regimes, and viewing geometry that can observe RSOs in lighting conditions and orbital geometries inaccessible from Earth's surface.

The hosted payload model differentiates Scout Space from satellite constellation operators building dedicated SDA spacecraft: instead of paying full satellite costs, ORCA sensors share bus costs with the host operator, reducing customer acquisition cost per sensor and enabling faster deployment across multiple orbital altitudes and inclinations. This approach is analogous to how companies like Spire and GeoOptics deploy sensors as secondary payloads.

US Space Force and AFRL contract support validates Scout Space's technology readiness and provides revenue to fund development. These contracts reflect the Department of Defense's growing investment in commercial SDA capabilities to supplement the traditional Space Fence radar network, commercial LeoLabs radar services, and legacy US Space Command tracking infrastructure.

Scout Space competes with ExoAnalytic Solutions, Istari Digital, and Slingshot Aerospace in the commercial SDA market, differentiating through space-based sensor vantage point rather than ground-based networks, which provides observational capabilities over the complete orbital shell rather than latitude-limited ground coverage.
