SES Quantum is SES's initiative developing quantum key distribution (QKD) satellite infrastructure for secure European communications. The flagship program is Eagle-1, a QKD satellite being developed under an ESA and European Commission contract as part of the EuroQCI (European Quantum Communication Infrastructure) initiative — Europe's sovereign answer to Chinese leadership in satellite QKD demonstrated by China's Micius satellite.
Eagle-1 will distribute quantum encryption keys via photon polarization between ground stations, theoretically providing information-theoretically secure key exchange that cannot be broken even by quantum computers. SES brings its GEO/MEO satellite operational expertise to the program while partnering with quantum technology providers for the QKD payload. The EuroQCI infrastructure also involves SES's network expertise to link quantum nodes across EU member states.
