Sharp Corporation's Space Solar division is Japan's only JAXA-qualified space-grade solar cell manufacturer, with over 50 years of heritage powering more than 190 satellites across Japanese, American, and European missions. Sharp developed Japan's first space solar cells in the 1970s and has continuously refined their triple-junction (3J) gallium arsenide (GaAs) solar cell technology to achieve conversion efficiencies exceeding 30% — among the highest commercially available for space applications. Sharp Space solar cells use InGaP/GaAs/Ge triple-junction architectures that are optimized for the AM0 solar spectrum in space, with radiation tolerance design for multi-year GEO and MEO mission lifetimes under proton and electron bombardment. The cells powered JAXA's SLIM (Smart Lander for Investigating Moon) lunar lander, which touched down on the Moon's surface in January 2024 — Japan's historic first lunar landing — operating through the harsh lunar night using Sharp's cold-tolerant panel design. Sharp supplies solar panels to major Japanese satellite manufacturers including NEC, Mitsubishi Electric, and JAXA/ISAS for government programs, as well as international customers through Airbus and other European prime contractors who certify non-Japanese components for their satellite buses. Sharp's space solar business operates alongside its consumer photovoltaics division (a much larger revenue segment), but benefits from shared materials science R&D for high-efficiency III-V compound semiconductors. The company's Nara prefecture facilities produce solar cells under AS9100 aerospace quality management systems. Sharp faces competition from Spectrolab (a Boeing subsidiary) and Azur Space (German) as the dominant global suppliers of space-grade triple-junction solar cells.
