Sierra Space Life Sciences

Sierra Space Life Sciences is the biotechnology and microgravity research division of Sierra Space, the commercial space company spun out of Sierra Nevada Corporation in 2021 and headquartered in Louisville, Colorado. The division develops turnkey life science research payloads, automated experiment systems, and bio-manufacturing platforms for the International Space Station and Sierra Space's own Orbital Reef commercial space station under development with Boeing and Blue Origin.

Microgravity environments unlock biological processes impossible on Earth: protein crystals grown in space have purer, more uniform lattices ideal for drug structure determination; stem cells cultured without gravity's compressive forces can differentiate more rapidly; pharmaceutical compounds that would precipitate or stratify in terrestrial bioreactors can be produced in homogeneous solution. Sierra Space Life Sciences targets these opportunities by providing researchers — pharmaceutical companies, biotech firms, and academic groups — with standardized hardware and on-orbit services that reduce the barrier to ISS-based experiments.

The division's payload portfolio includes standardized locker-size experiment modules compatible with ISS EXPRESS Racks and NanoRacks-class carriers, automated fluid handling systems for cell culture experiments requiring minimal crew intervention, and cold-stowage solutions for preserving samples through the return journey. Sierra Space Life Sciences collaborates with ISS National Lab, which allocates the U.S. portion of ISS science to commercial users, to recruit pharmaceutical and biotech clients.

Looking forward, Sierra Space Life Sciences is developing the life science infrastructure for Orbital Reef — intended as a commercial LEO destination to replace ISS post-2030. Orbital Reef's design incorporates dedicated microgravity manufacturing modules where continuous bio-manufacturing could produce batch quantities of biologics or stem cells on commercially contracted schedules, rather than the episodic experimental runs possible on ISS. The division competes with Axiom Space's research program, Redwire Space's plant growth systems, and Space Tango's automated ISS laboratory modules for the nascent commercial microgravity research market.
