Conventional GaAs-based triple-junction solar cells used on most satellites degrade over time as high-energy protons and electrons from the Van Allen belts and solar energetic particle events create crystal lattice defects that reduce minority carrier lifetime and thus cell efficiency. This degradation is irreversible in standard cells — mission designers must specify Beginning of Life (BOL) power exceeding End of Life (EOL) requirements by 20–40% to account for radiation-induced losses, driving larger, heavier, more expensive solar arrays. Solestial's amorphous silicon cells exhibit the Staebler-Wronski light-induced degradation that also gives them an annealing behavior: at temperatures above approximately 100°C, thermal energy allows hydrogen atoms to repair certain defect types, partially restoring performance. In GEO orbit, where temperature cycling between solar illumination and eclipse regularly reaches 100°C+ on sun-facing surfaces, this self-annealing occurs passively without any active thermal management.

Solestial's cells are significantly thinner and lighter than conventional crystalline silicon or III-V cells, enabling high specific power (W/kg) for mass-constrained satellites. The 30,000 sq ft manufacturing facility in Tempe achieves 1 MW of annual solar cell production capacity, targeting commercial satellite OEMs seeking radiation-hard, lightweight power solutions for LEO and GEO applications.

Solestial competes with SolAero Technologies (now Rocket Lab, Albuquerque NM) — the dominant US manufacturer of space-grade III-V solar cells for NASA and commercial satellites — and Azur Space (Germany, Airbus subsidiary) for space solar cell supply contracts. Its silicon technology thesis directly challenges the incumbents' GaAs paradigm on cost, weight, and radiation tolerance in specific mission profiles.
