About Southwest Research Institute

Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) is an independent, nonprofit applied research and development organization headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, founded in 1947 by oil entrepreneur Tom Slick. With approximately 3,000 staff and annual revenues exceeding $700 million, SwRI ranks among the largest contract research organizations in the United States, spanning mechanical engineering, chemistry, Earth sciences, and — most prominently in public visibility — planetary science and space instrumentation.

SwRI's Space Science and Engineering Division has built flight instruments for some of NASA's most celebrated missions. New Horizons (launched 2006, Pluto flyby July 2015) is SwRI's highest-profile mission: principal investigator Alan Stern led the $700M spacecraft that provided the first close flyby of Pluto and returned 50GB of data revealing nitrogen ice plains (Tombaugh Regio), a hazy multi-layer atmosphere, and geologically active surface features. SwRI built New Horizons' ALICE ultraviolet spectrometer, PEPSSI particle spectrometer, and REX radio science instrument. Juno (Jupiter orbiter since 2016) carries SwRI's JADE plasma detector and UVS ultraviolet spectrograph mapping Jupiter's auroras and magnetosphere in unprecedented detail. Parker Solar Probe (launched 2018) carries SwRI's SWEAP suite measuring solar wind ions and electrons as the spacecraft achieves successive solar perihelion records approaching 4 million miles. Europa Clipper (launched 2024) carries SwRI's UVS instrument and SwRI contribution to MASPEX (mass spectrometer).

SwRI's heliospheric physics heritage extends back to the 1960s with instruments on IMP, ACE, Ulysses, and Wind spacecraft defining the inner heliosphere's structure. The institute also operates space domain awareness programs: the MIST (MODEST Imagery Surveillance Telescope) optical sensor network and space weather modeling contracts for NOAA and DoD. Commercial services include instrument calibration in vacuum-UV chambers and particle accelerator beam testing facilities unavailable at most universities. Primary competitors for planetary instrument lead roles include APL (Johns Hopkins), LASP (Colorado), and JPL's internal instrument teams.
