Space Adventures

Space Adventures is an American space tourism and experiences company founded in 1998 by Eric Anderson and headquartered in Vienna, Virginia, that arranged the only private orbital spaceflights conducted to date — a record of seven private citizens flown to the International Space Station aboard Russian Soyuz spacecraft between 2001 and 2009.

The company's pioneering achievement came in April 2001 when Dennis Tito, an American businessman and former JPL rocket scientist, flew to the ISS aboard Soyuz TM-32 as the world's first paying space tourist — reportedly paying approximately $20 million for the 10-day orbital mission. Subsequent Space Adventures clients included Mark Shuttleworth (South Africa, 2002), Gregory Olsen (2005), Anousheh Ansari (2006, first woman space tourist), Charles Simonyi (two flights: 2007 and 2009), Richard Garriott (2008), and Guy Laliberté, Cirque du Soleil founder (2009).

Each mission was brokered through RSC Energia and Roscosmos, with clients training at Star City cosmonaut facility near Moscow for 6-8 months before flight. The ISS tourist program suspended when Space Shuttle retirement eliminated spare Soyuz seats that had accommodated paying passengers.

Space Adventures also arranged suborbital training and stratospheric flight experiences, MiG-25 Foxbat flights to 82,000 feet at Zhukovsky Air Base near Moscow, and complete cosmonaut training packages at Star City. The company announced lunar flyby missions using modified Soyuz trajectories — a product predating Artemis that never flew. Space Adventures remains a brokering entity for commercial spaceflight arrangements as SpaceX, Axiom Space, and Virgin Galactic now offer direct consumer orbital and suborbital experiences.
