About Space Cargo Unlimited

Space Cargo Unlimited, founded in 2016 and headquartered in Luxembourg, is building Europe's first commercial autonomous orbital platform for microgravity research and manufacturing — developing REV (Returnable Experiment Vehicle) spacecraft that fly to the ISS (or future commercial space stations), execute automated biological and materials science experiments in orbit, and return samples to Earth for analysis and commercial application.

Space Cargo Unlimited gained international attention for pioneering agricultural and beverage innovation experiments in space: the company sent wine and grapevine research samples to the ISS to study how microgravity, radiation, and space environment affect wine aging chemistry, yeast behavior, and grapevine cell biology. While this may sound niche, the underlying research question is serious — understanding how biological aging processes differ in space reveals fundamental biological clock mechanisms with potential pharmaceutical and biotechnology applications beyond wine. The wine space experiment attracted premium brand partnerships (Château Pétrus wine was aboard) and generated significant media coverage that raised awareness of commercial space biotech.

The REV platform concept enables automated sample loading at ground facilities, autonomous experiment execution on orbit following pre-programmed protocols, and sample return aboard Cargo Dragon or other return vehicles — providing pharmaceutical and biotech companies with a turnkey microgravity experiment service without requiring astronaut time or dedicated research staff at Johnson Space Center.

Space Cargo Unlimited raised €27.5 million in a Series A funding round in 2025 from European and strategic investors, enabling development of a 7-flight commercial microgravity program starting in 2026. Luxembourg's supportive commercial space regulatory environment and the Luxembourg Space Agency's active investment in the in-space economy ecosystem (including contracts with Yuri, Space Cargo, and others) provide a favorable home market context.

The company competes with Yuri (Germany), LambdaVision (US), and NanoRacks (Voyager Space) in the commercial microgravity research services market.
