Quick Facts
About Space Center Houston
Space Center Houston is the official visitor center of NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC), located in Houston, Texas, open since 1992. Operated by Manned Space Flight Education Foundation, Inc. — an independent nonprofit designated by NASA — Space Center Houston serves as the primary public interface for NASA JSC, the center responsible for human spaceflight mission operations, astronaut training, Mission Control, and the International Space Station program. The center attracts approximately 1.25 million visitors annually and is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums.
Space Center Houston's exhibits span NASA's entire human spaceflight history from Mercury through Artemis. The centerpiece exhibit is the Independence Plaza, a Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft with a full-size Space Shuttle replica (Independence) mounted on top — the only place in the world where visitors can walk through a realistic Space Shuttle interior.
Historic Mission Control (MCC-H), where Apollo missions were managed and where flight controllers directed the moon landings, is a National Historic Landmark preserved in its 1960s configuration and open for guided tram tours that also access rocket park, where Saturn V flight article SA-514 — one of only three remaining Saturn V rockets — lies horizontal for walk-alongside viewing in a climate-controlled facility, displaying all three stages at 111 meters of engineering history.
The education mission is substantial: Space Center Houston's Manned Space Flight Education Foundation programs serve approximately 250,000 teachers and students annually through Space Center University (multi-day residential overnight programs for high school students), Mars Rover design challenges, robotics workshops, and STEM curriculum-aligned day programs. The center partners with NASA to provide educator professional development aligned with Next Generation Science Standards.
Space Center Houston also houses the Astronaut Gallery (personal items and suits of all U.S. astronauts), the Gateway to Space gallery featuring mission hardware, and rotating special exhibitions. The center serves as a key anchor of the Houston Space Economy and hosts major events including public astronaut appearances, NASA mission celebrations, and FIRST Robotics programs.
