About Space Kidz India

Updated 2026-09-11

Space Kidz India is an Indian space-education and small-satellite organisation based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, founded around 2011-2012 to involve school and university students in hands-on satellite and aerospace projects, with Dr. Srimathy Kesan identified in company material as its leading figure and mission director.

The organisation has built and flown several low-cost student satellites launched by ISRO, including KalamSat (2017), a roughly 64-gram femtosatellite flown on a suborbital PSLV technology-demonstration flight that was, at the time, described as the world's lightest satellite, and AzaadiSAT (2022/2023), an 8U CubeSat carrying 75 small experimental payloads designed by around 750 Indian school students; an initial AzaadiSAT launch was lost to a PSLV-C61 failure and the mission was later reflown.

Space Kidz India has continued this model with later missions, including the planned ShakthiSAT lunar-mapping education mission involving student teams from multiple countries. The organisation partners with ISRO, IN-SPACe and other Indian space-sector bodies, and combines satellite-building programmes with STEM outreach, training and competitions for school-age students across India. It operates as a private company rather than a registered charity, generating revenue from its education and satellite-integration programmes. Space Kidz India remains active and continues to run satellite and STEM education programmes as of 2026.
