Space Machines Company, founded in 2018 and headquartered in Sydney, Australia, develops orbital servicing vehicles (OSVs) for satellite inspection, refueling, life extension, and debris removal — establishing itself as Australia's leading in-space servicing company with its Optimus OSV, the largest privately-built Australian satellite at 270 kg launched in March 2024.

Optimus is a multi-purpose orbital servicing vehicle designed to approach other satellites in orbit for proximity operations including: visual inspection of damaged or anomalous satellites for damage assessment; in-space refueling to extend satellite operational life beyond propellant depletion; relocation of satellites within or between orbital slots; and end-of-life disposal assistance for satellites that lack sufficient remaining propellant to perform their own deorbit. These services address the growing commercial market for satellite life extension as GEO satellite operators seek to defer $300+ million replacement satellite procurements through refueling.

Space Machines Company received an A$8.5 million grant from Australia's MRIIP (Modern Manufacturing Initiative) program supporting its Optimus Factory initiative — a planned production facility targeting 20 spacecraft per year manufacturing capacity, establishing Australia's first volume spacecraft manufacturing capability and positioning Space Machines as a regular production supplier rather than a custom spacecraft integrator.

Australia's government investment in Space Machines reflects the Australian Space Agency's strategy to build sovereign space manufacturing capability and develop Australian commercial space services alongside Southern Launch and Gilmour Space Technologies.
