Space One conducted KAIROS's inaugural launch attempt on March 13, 2024, from its Kii Spaceport in Wakayama Prefecture — the first privately-operated orbital launch site in Japan — but the vehicle exploded shortly after ignition due to a flight termination system activation. The company is analyzing the failure and preparing for a second launch attempt. KAIROS is designed to deliver 250 kg to SSO, targeting the responsive launch market for Japanese government and commercial satellite customers.
