Space Shift

Space Shift, headquartered in Tokyo, Japan and founded in 2016, is a Japanese Earth observation analytics company specializing in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data processing and analysis — using AI and deep learning algorithms to extract actionable intelligence from SAR satellite imagery for infrastructure monitoring, agricultural applications, disaster response, and defense/security markets.

SAR satellites (including JAXA's ALOS-2, ICEYE's constellation, Capella Space, and Umbra's satellites) use microwave radar pulses to create high-resolution surface imagery that penetrates clouds and operates day and night — capabilities that optical satellites lack. However, raw SAR data requires specialized processing: complex SAR interferometry (InSAR) techniques stack multiple SAR passes to detect millimeter-scale surface deformation caused by subsidence, volcanic inflation, earthquake slip, and building settlement; while amplitude-based change detection detects new construction, vehicle presence, and flood extent. Space Shift's deep learning models automate these analyses that previously required PhDs in radar remote sensing.

Space Shift's virtual constellation approach integrates SAR data from multiple commercial and government satellite providers — rather than operating its own satellites — applying consistent AI processing pipelines across heterogeneous data sources to create unified analytical products. This aggregator model provides customers with access to more frequent revisit and diverse viewing geometries than any single SAR constellation can provide, while shielding customers from satellite-specific data format complexity.

Key product areas include: InSAR ground deformation monitoring for infrastructure operators managing pipeline, railway, dam, and building assets; SAR-based agricultural monitoring detecting crop type, biomass, and soil moisture that optical sensors cannot measure through cloud cover; object detection for maritime domain awareness (ship detection and classification in SAR scenes); and damage assessment for disaster response organizations quantifying building collapse after earthquakes or typhoons.

Space Shift participates in Japan's growing commercial space analytics ecosystem alongside Synspective (which operates its own SAR constellation) and Weathernews' geospatial analytics services.
