SpaceRyde is a Concord, Ontario-based Canadian launch startup founded in 2018 developing a balloon-assisted small satellite launch system that uses a stratospheric high-altitude balloon to carry a rocket to 30-40 km altitude before igniting — launching from air and bypassing the densest, most drag-intensive portion of Earth's atmosphere to dramatically reduce the propellant a rocket must carry.

In the SpaceRyde concept, a high-altitude balloon lifts a small rocket to the stratosphere where atmospheric density is less than 1% of sea level; from there, the rocket ignites and continues to orbit without fighting the thick lower atmosphere that consumes 50-60% of propellant mass in ground-launched rockets.

This air-launch approach is not unique — Northrop Grumman's Pegasus XL rocket uses a similar high-altitude release from a converted L-1011 aircraft — but SpaceRyde's balloon-based approach aims to be radically simpler and cheaper than aircraft-based launchers, as a stratospheric balloon requires no runways, no pilots, and minimal ground infrastructure. SpaceRyde targets the 100-500 kg to LEO market at a price point below conventional ground-launch alternatives. The company has conducted balloon demonstration flights and is developing its rocket propulsion system in Concord, leveraging Ontario's manufacturing ecosystem.

Canadian aerospace companies like MDA Group and Canadensys Aerospace provide a technology ecosystem context. SpaceRyde competes with Rocketstar, Leo Aerospace (balloon-based), Aevum (drone-launched), and Virgin Orbit's carrier aircraft concept as air-launch alternative approaches, while ground-launched competitors Rocket Lab Electron and ABL Space RS1 remain the primary market alternatives for the sub-300 kg dedicated launch segment.
