Spectrolab, Inc. is a Sylmar, California-based Boeing subsidiary founded in 1956 and the world's foremost manufacturer of multi-junction (MJ) solar cells for space applications — producing the III-V compound semiconductor photovoltaic cells that generate electrical power aboard the majority of Western satellites, spacecraft, and the International Space Station, with efficiency levels 50-75% higher than the best commercial silicon solar cells.

The core technology is multi-junction III-V photovoltaics: Spectrolab's cells stack multiple semiconductor layers (typically Gallium Indium Phosphide / Gallium Arsenide / Germanium, or GaInP/GaAs/Ge and advanced variants thereof) in a vertically integrated structure where each sub-cell absorbs a different portion of the solar spectrum. The top junction captures short-wavelength blue/UV light; the middle junction captures visible/near-IR; the bottom germanium junction captures longer infrared wavelengths. The result is a conversion efficiency of 32-35% under the AM0 (air mass zero, unfiltered sunlight in space) spectrum — compared to 18-22% for the best commercial silicon panels. In research settings with concentrated light, Spectrolab has set multijunction efficiency records above 45%.

Nearly every major Western communications satellite flying today uses Spectrolab solar cells: Boeing 702/702MP bus (Boeing's own satellite platform), Maxar GeoStar bus, Airbus Eurostar 3000 and Neo buses, SSTL-300/1000 platforms, Northrop Grumman GEOStar platforms — all standard with Spectrolab cells in their solar arrays. LEO constellations including the original GPS Block IIA/IIR/IIF satellites and GPS III use Spectrolab cells. The International Space Station's ISS Roll-Out Solar Arrays (iROSA) installed in 2021-2024 use advanced Spectrolab cells achieving higher power density than the 1990s-era original arrays they augment.

Historically, Spectrolab cells powered the Mars Exploration Rovers Spirit and Opportunity (2003), which each far outlasted their 90-day design life on solar power. Boeing acquired Spectrolab from Hughes Aircraft (its original owner and the originator of space solar cell production) in 1997. Primary competitors include SolAero Technologies (acquired by Rocket Lab in 2022, providing Rocket Lab's solar array supply chain vertical integration) and Azur Space (Germany, European MJ cell manufacturer serving ESA programs).
