SSTL (Surrey Satellite)
Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL) is Guildford, Surrey's pioneering small satellite manufacturer founded in 1985 as a spin-out from the University of Surrey by Sir Martin Sweeting, who had demonstrated in the 1970s and early 1980s that university-built satellites using commercial-off-the-shelf electronics could survive in space — fundamentally challenging the orthodoxy that space hardware required extreme cost and complexity.

About SSTL (Surrey Satellite)
Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL) is Guildford, Surrey's pioneering small satellite manufacturer founded in 1985 as a spin-out from the University of Surrey by Sir Martin Sweeting, who had demonstrated in the 1970s and early 1980s that university-built satellites using commercial-off-the-shelf electronics could survive in space — fundamentally challenging the orthodoxy that space hardware required extreme cost and complexity. Now a subsidiary of Airbus Defence and Space (acquired in 2009), SSTL has designed and built more than 70 satellites for over 22 countries, establishing the template for the modern small satellite industry that companies like Planet, Spire, and Rocket Lab built upon. SSTL's milestone programs span five decades: the Disaster Monitoring Constellation (DMC), a multi-national shared Earth observation resource where Algeria, Nigeria, Turkey, China, and the UK each launched SSTL-built satellites for global environmental monitoring; the NovaSAR synthetic aperture radar constellation demonstrating low-cost SAR Earth observation from SSTL's 450 kg platform class; Carbonite video demonstration satellites proving sub-meter video from orbit was commercially viable; and GPS radio occultation atmospheric sounding satellites for EUMETSAT. SSTL also supplies satellite platforms and subsystems to international prime contractors — its SSTL-300 and SSTL-1000 platform families are used for commercial and government missions. Through the Surrey Space Centre (academic partner), SSTL maintains a pipeline of mission concepts from PhD research through to commercial programs. SSTL's Guildford campus is a keystone of the UK space cluster anchored by Guildford, Stevenage (Airbus prime), and Harwell (UKSA/RAL Space), training hundreds of engineers who have seeded UK space startups.
