About ST Engineering iDirect

ST Engineering iDirect (formerly iDirect, now a subsidiary of Singapore's ST Engineering) is a VSAT satellite communications technology company founded in 1994 and headquartered in Herndon, Virginia. The company develops the satellite modem hardware, hub infrastructure, and network management software that forms the backbone of enterprise, government, and mobility VSAT networks worldwide. iDirect's technology is deployed across hundreds of satellite operators and service providers globally, making it one of the world's most widely used VSAT platform vendors by installed network count.

iDirect's flagship product family, the iQ Series modem line and the Evolution platform, implements advanced waveforms including DVB-S2/S2X return channel processing, adaptive coding and modulation (ACM), and multi-frequency TDMA (MF-TDMA) that maximize spectral efficiency over both traditional GEO satellites and modern high-throughput satellites (HTS) using Ku-band and Ka-band spot beams. The iQ terminals achieve throughputs up to 100+ Mbps downlink, enabling high-bandwidth enterprise branches, maritime vessels, government mobile platforms, and cellular backhaul applications.

The Velocity platform extends iDirect's capabilities to MEO (O3b/SES mPOWER) and LEO satellite networks, supporting the low-latency handoff management required as terminals move between beams across non-geostationary constellations. This positions iDirect as a multi-orbit networking layer, allowing service providers to manage mixed GEO/MEO/LEO hybrid networks through a single platform — a key differentiator as operators like SES, Intelsat, and Telesat deploy MEO and LEO systems alongside existing GEO fleets.

iDirect was acquired by ST Engineering, the Singapore defense and engineering conglomerate, in 2015 (via ST Engineering's subsidiary Satcom) for approximately $340 million. The acquisition aligned with ST Engineering's strategy of building defense SATCOM capabilities alongside commercial satellite ground systems. iDirect's government division serves DoD and allied military customers with Type 1 encrypted terminal systems, HAIPE-compliant networks, and deployable satellite communications suites. The company competes with Hughes Network Systems, ViaSat's ground systems division, Comtech EF Data, and Gilat Satellite Networks for the VSAT equipment market.
