Stanford Space Initiative

The Stanford Space Initiative (SSI) is Stanford University's primary student-run space organization, founded in 2013 to give undergraduate and graduate engineering students hands-on experience designing, building, and launching real spacecraft and rockets.

SSI operates multiple concurrent project teams at any given time, each functioning like a startup within the university: a CubeSat team designing a 3U nanosatellite for technology demonstration; a high-power rocketry team building sounding rockets aimed at the Karman line (100 km altitude); a balloon team launching stratospheric scientific payloads; and experimental teams exploring lunar robotics, space habitat design, and in-space manufacturing.

Stanford's unique position at the center of Silicon Valley means SSI students rotate through internships at SpaceX, Planet Labs, Rocket Lab, NASA Ames, and the dozens of space startups in the Bay Area ecosystem, creating a two-way flow that seeds commercial companies with talent and brings industry problems back to campus. Notable SSI alumni have co-founded or held senior roles at Planet Labs (which traces its founding to NASA Ames and Stanford connections), Relativity Space, Astra, and multiple smaller space ventures.

SSI collaborates with Stanford's aeronautics and astronautics faculty for technical mentorship and has received grants from industry sponsors including Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and NASA. The organization hosts annual space conferences and participates in NASA's CubeSat Launch Initiative (CSLI). Stanford's proximity to Moffett Field and NASA Ames Research Center provides SSI with testing partnerships and potential launch opportunities through NASA's Educational Launch of Nanosatellites (ELaNa) program.
