The University of Stuttgart's aerospace programs, centered on the Institut für Raumfahrtsysteme (IRS — Institute of Space Systems) and the Institut für Flugzeugbau (IAF — Institute of Aircraft Design), constitute one of Germany's strongest university-level space research hubs. Stuttgart's IRS is particularly known for hybrid rocket propulsion research — combining solid fuel grains with liquid or gaseous oxidizers — spacecraft thermal analysis, small satellite systems engineering, and space debris reentry modeling.

A flagship IRS achievement is the Flying Laptop satellite, a 120 kg microsatellite launched in 2017 that has been fully developed and operated by Stuttgart University students and researchers, demonstrating advanced attitude control, optical imagery, and Earth observation capabilities. The IAF focuses on structural design for aerospace vehicles including lightweight composite structures relevant to launch vehicle and spacecraft manufacturing. Stuttgart's engineering heritage — the city is also home to Airbus (for helicopter systems), Daimler, Bosch, and the DLR Institute of Aerodynamics — creates a rich industrial partnership environment.

The university works closely with DLR (German Aerospace Center) Stuttgart, which conducts parallel space propulsion, materials, and atmospheric research. Stuttgart graduate engineers feed into the broader German and European aerospace industry including ArianeGroup, OHB, and ESA, maintaining Germany's position as Europe's most industrially significant space nation by spending and employment.
