Swarm Technologies, founded in 2016 and headquartered in Mountain View, California, was a pioneering satellite IoT connectivity startup that built the world's lowest-cost satellite IoT network by deploying 120 'SpaceBEE' picosatellites — among the smallest commercial satellites ever launched at approximately 11 cm × 11 cm × 2.8 cm — operating on VHF frequencies to provide bidirectional data messaging for remote asset tracking and sensor monitoring at prices dramatically lower than established satellite IoT providers.

Swarm's core innovation was miniaturization and cost reduction: by building satellites at consumer electronics scale, manufacturing them internally in large quantities, and using unlicensed-adjacent VHF spectrum with simple, low-power ground terminals (Swarm's 'Tile' modem, approximately credit card size, costing under $500), the company created IoT connectivity competitive at monthly service rates of $5-15 per device — far below Iridium's $10-50+/month or Inmarsat's $30-100+/month for comparable IoT services.

The low power and small form factor enabled integration into agricultural sensors, wildlife tracking collars, flood monitoring sensors in remote river basins (a specific application Swarm highlighted for developing world early warning systems), and fishing vessel monitoring in Pacific island nations where cellular infrastructure doesn't exist.

Swarm became notable in the regulatory domain when it launched four SpaceBEE picosatellites in 2018 without the required FCC license — leading to a $900,000 fine and significant industry discussion about smallsat regulatory compliance. The company subsequently obtained all necessary licenses and expanded its constellation lawfully.

SpaceX acquired Swarm Technologies in 2021 for an undisclosed amount. In 2025, SpaceX announced it would leverage Swarm's satellite network and technology as the foundation for a dedicated IoT/direct-to-device connectivity service integrated with the Starlink platform, extending coverage to low-power IoT devices that cannot connect to Starlink's consumer broadband service.
