About SSPA (Swedish Space Corporation)
Swedish Space Corporation (SSC), operating under the brand SSC Space, is a Swedish state-owned company founded in 1972 and headquartered in Solna near Stockholm. SSC provides space services across three domains: a global ground station network for satellite command, control, and data downlink; suborbital rocket and stratospheric balloon launch services from Esrange Space Center in Kiruna; and satellite operations support and engineering services to international customers.
SSC's most strategically significant asset is Esrange Space Center, located 45 km east of Kiruna above the Arctic Circle at 67.9°N. Esrange is one of the world's premier suborbital and balloon launch facilities, operating since 1966. More than 600 sounding rockets have launched from Esrange for European and international researchers studying the upper atmosphere, aurora, microgravity physics, and materials science. The facility also supports stratospheric balloon campaigns — long-duration scientific payloads floated to 30–40 km altitude — for ESA, NASA's Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility, and European universities. Crucially, SSC has been developing Esrange for small orbital launch capability, targeting maiden orbital flights in the late 2020s to provide European sovereign launch access from northern latitudes ideal for sun-synchronous and polar orbits.
SSC's global ground station network spans 10+ stations on six continents, including sites at Esrange (Sweden), South Point Hawaii, Inuvik (Canada), Santiago (Chile), Dongara (Australia), and O'Higgins (Antarctica). These stations support LEO satellite TT&C for commercial operators, ESA missions, and national space programs. The network's polar and near-polar coverage is particularly valuable for sun-synchronous EO satellites requiring multiple daily contacts.
On the satellite data services side, SSC provides remote sensing data processing and analytics for natural resources, climate monitoring, and Swedish government applications. SSC is owned by the Swedish state and operates as a commercial entity, recovering costs through contracts with ESA, NASA, commercial satellite operators, and European research institutions. SSC competes with Kongsberg Satellite Services (KSAT) in the polar ground station market, and with RocketLab and Orbex in the European small satellite launch segment.
