About Tanegashima Space Center

Tanegashima Space Center (TNSC) is Japan's largest and primary orbital launch facility, operated by JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) since its establishment in 1969 on the southern tip of Tanegashima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture (30.4°N, 130.97°E). Its relatively low latitude — for a Japanese site — provides a meaningful velocity contribution from Earth's rotation for launches toward geostationary transfer orbit, and the surrounding Pacific Ocean provides a safe downrange area for debris fallout from early flight anomalies.

TNSC hosts Japan's flagship launch vehicles from two launch pads at the Yoshinobu Launch Complex. The H-IIA rocket (first flight 2001) became Japan's workhorse medium-heavy lift launcher with 47 successes from 48 attempts (a single failure in 2003 led to its destruction), delivering 4-6 tonnes to GTO for JAXA science missions, Earth observation satellites, and commercial launches including the UAE's Al-Amal (Hope) Mars orbiter in 2020 and South Korea's Danuri lunar orbiter in 2022. H-IIA retired in 2024 after 48 flights.

The H3 rocket — Japan's next-generation, lower-cost successor designed to be internationally competitive at approximately ¥5-6 billion per launch vs. H-IIA's ¥10+ billion — had a troubled debut: its first launch in March 2023 ended in second-stage failure and payload loss, but the second launch in February 2024 succeeded, lofting DAICHI-4 (ALOS-4) L-band SAR satellite to orbit. H3 targets 4-6.5 tonnes to GTO in standard configurations.

The Epsilon solid-propellant small rocket launched from TNSC's mobile launcher has flown multiple times for JAXA science missions including ASNARO-2 and DETH SPI, though a 2022 anomaly led to flight suspension and program review. Epsilon-S, an upgraded variant, is under development. TNSC also hosts rocket engine and component testing stands used by JAXA and domestic aerospace suppliers including Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, IHI Aerospace, and JAXA's own propulsion laboratories. The center hosts a museum attracting tens of thousands of visitors per launch, making it a significant space tourism draw for Japan's southern Kyushu region.
