About University of Tartu ESTCube Program

The ESTCube Program is a satellite-building initiative run by the University of Tartu, through what was Tartu Observatory and is now part of the university, created by and aimed at training Estonian students in space technology. The program began with the 2013 launch of ESTCube-1, Estonia's first satellite, a 1.048-kilogram 1U CubeSat that flew on a Vega rocket from Kourou on 7 May 2013. Hundreds of students from Estonian universities contributed to the project, working alongside international partners including Finland's Meteorological Institute and Germany's DLR.

ESTCube-1 tested an electric solar wind sail (E-sail), a Finnish-invented propulsion concept; the sail itself failed to deploy, but the satellite's cold-cathode electron emitters worked and it returned 230 Earth images before its mission ended in February 2015, generating 29 bachelor's and 19 master's theses and five doctoral dissertations. ESTCube-2, designed to validate satellite platforms for deep-space exploration and test vegetation-monitoring cameras, launched on 9 October 2023 but was destroyed on reentry after a rocket payload-fairing defect prevented orbital insertion.

The program's next satellite, ESTCube-3, is intended to test cybersecurity standards for space systems; ESA and the University of Tartu have signed development agreements for it, targeting a launch in early 2029. The program is funded through Estonian government science grants, university funding and European partnerships rather than commercial revenue.
