About Telesat Canada

Telesat is one of the world's largest and oldest commercial satellite operators, founded in 1969 and headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. Established to connect Canada's vast geography — among the first commercial satellite operators in the world — Telesat has operated geostationary satellites for more than 50 years, serving Canadian broadcast distribution, direct-to-home television, government communications, and enterprise broadband. Telesat is majority-owned by PSP Investments (the Canadian federal public service pension fund) and Loral Space & Communications, and trades on the Nasdaq and TSX under TSAT.

Telesat's existing GEO fleet includes Anik satellites providing Canadian domestic services plus Telstar satellites serving North American and transatlantic broadcast and broadband. The company holds extensive C-band, Ku-band, and Ka-band spectrum rights over North America, representing significant orbital slot and spectrum assets accumulated over decades of ITU filings and regulatory engagement.

Telesat's strategic pivot is Telesat Lightspeed, a planned LEO broadband constellation of approximately 198 satellites in polar and inclined orbits targeting enterprise and government customers — specifically maritime, aviation, energy sector, and government network operators — rather than residential consumer broadband. Lightspeed is differentiated from Starlink and OneWeb by targeting premium high-throughput enterprise customers willing to pay for guaranteed performance and latency guarantees. The constellation would use Ka-band inter-satellite links to route traffic without ground hops, achieving sub-50 ms latency.

Telesat selected MDA Space (formerly MacDonald Dettwiler) as the prime manufacturer for Lightspeed satellites in a contract worth approximately CAD $3 billion, with launch services from SpaceX and a first launch target in the late 2020s. Telesat has secured anchor customer commitments from Canadian government programs and enterprise operators. Financing the approximately $5 billion constellation build-out has been the primary challenge, with the Canadian government providing up to CAD $1.44 billion in loans and equity, signaling the strategic importance of sovereign LEO access to Canada.
