About Telesat Lightspeed

Telesat Lightspeed is the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) broadband constellation program of Canadian satellite operator Telesat, targeting enterprise, government, and mobility markets with fiber-like latency and global coverage. The constellation is planned at approximately 188 satellites in polar and inclined orbits, with Telesat contracting MDA Space to build the satellites. Unlike consumer-focused LEO competitors (Starlink, OneWeb), Lightspeed is specifically designed for high-throughput enterprise connectivity, airline in-flight Wi-Fi, maritime, and government secure communications. The program has faced funding challenges and schedule slips — originally targeting launch from 2023–2024, it has been pushed as Telesat works to secure sufficient customer commitments and financing. Telesat secured significant funding from the Canadian and Quebec governments to advance the program.
