Quick Facts
About Thaicom
Thaicom Public Company Limited (SET: THCOM) is Thailand's national satellite operator, publicly listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand with approximately $500 million market capitalization — founded in 1991 as an initiative of the Thai government and the Shinawatra Group (founded by former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra), operating GEO communications satellites that provide broadcasting, broadband, and telecommunications services across Thailand and the broader Asia-Pacific region.
Thaicom's satellite fleet includes multiple GEO satellites positioned at orbital slots providing coverage across Southeast Asia, South Asia, and extending into parts of Africa and Eastern Europe. Thaicom 6 (2014) and Thaicom 8 (2016) are the newer additions to the fleet, with Ka-band high-throughput capacity for broadband services and Ku-band capacity for broadcasting. Thaicom 4 (IPStar, 2005) was Asia's first and the world's largest Ka-band high-throughput satellite at launch, providing broadband internet across 14 countries in Asia-Pacific using spot beam technology — a landmark satellite representing Thai space ambitions at a time when HTS satellite technology was emerging.
Direct-to-home television broadcasting is Thaicom's primary revenue source: the company provides capacity for Thai free-to-air national broadcasters, pay-TV platform operators, and international content distribution across Southeast Asia. Rural broadband connectivity for underserved communities in Thailand and neighboring countries without fiber infrastructure represents a growing service.
Thaicom owns and operates Thailand's first and only satellite-based maritime communication network covering the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea — providing connectivity for Thai fishing vessels, merchant shipping, and offshore platforms in waters where terrestrial cellular networks don't reach.
The company has navigated the challenges facing GEO satellite operators as LEO constellations (Starlink in particular) have expanded into Asia-Pacific markets with compelling price-to-performance advantages for broadband applications. Thaicom's strategic focus has shifted toward value-added services and government contracts — including working with the Thai government on satellite-based connectivity for remote schools and government offices — while exploring potential LEO constellation participation.
Competitors include SES/O3b, Intelsat, Eutelsat/OneWeb, AsiaSat, and SpaceX Starlink for specific market segments across Asia-Pacific.
