TiSpace's propulsion approach uses hybrid rocket motors — a middle path between solid and liquid propellant rockets that burns a solid fuel (typically hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene, HTPB) with a liquid or gaseous oxidizer (typically liquid oxygen or nitrous oxide N2O). Hybrid motors offer operational advantages over liquid bipropellant engines: simpler mechanically (no liquid fuel turbopumps required), safer to handle and manufacture (solid fuel is inert until the oxidizer flows), and easily throttleable by controlling oxidizer flow rate. Compared to solid rockets, hybrids offer better specific impulse (fuel efficiency) and the ability to shut down and potentially restart the motor. The trade-off is lower thrust-to-weight ratio than liquid engines and combustion instability challenges that have made scaling hybrid motors to orbital class vehicles historically difficult.

TiSpace's HAPITH (Hybrid Advanced Propulsion Innovation TaiwanHybrid) rocket series started with suborbital sounding rocket tests — HAPITH I, III, and subsequent vehicles conducting test flights from Taiwan's Pingtung Launch Site operated by the National Space Organization (NSPO) and the Hualien coast — building flight heritage and demonstrating the hybrid propulsion technology at progressively larger scales. The ultimate goal is an orbital small satellite launcher, the Hapith V, capable of reaching LEO with smallsat payloads.

Taiwan's space program has intensified following geopolitical tension and the recognition that satellite communications are critical national security infrastructure. The NSPO (now Taiwan Space Agency, TASA) has launched Formosat Earth observation satellites and is developing the operational satellite constellation program. TiSpace's launch capability development is part of this broader effort. Competitors for Asia-Pacific small satellite launch include iSpace (Japan), Rocket Lab (New Zealand), and growing Indian commercial launchers.
