University of Illinois Aerospace

The Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is one of the largest and most research-intensive aerospace programs in the United States, housed in the Grainger College of Engineering with approximately 600 undergraduates and 400 graduate students. Founded in 1944, the department has produced thousands of engineers now working at NASA, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, SpaceX, and the Air Force Research Laboratory.

The university's proximity to major aerospace employers in Chicago and St. Louis, combined with strong STEM pipelines, makes UIUC a top recruiting target for Boeing (Hazelwood/St. Louis), Caterpillar's aerospace division, and Illinois-based defense contractors. UIUC collaborates extensively with NASA Marshall Space Flight Center on propulsion research, NASA Langley on hypersonics and computational aerodynamics, and AFRL on directed energy and advanced materials for spacecraft.

The department's Center for the Utilization of Remote Sensing in the Intelligent Transportation (CURIIS) bridges Earth observation research with commercial applications, while the Computational Science and Engineering program attracts AI/ML researchers working on spacecraft autonomy problems.
