Ultra Electronics Space

Ultra Electronics Space (now part of Cobham Advanced Electronic Systems following Cobham's acquisition of Ultra Electronics in 2022 for approximately £2.6B) was a British defense electronics company providing space-qualified electronics for military satellite communications, payload processing, and signals intelligence. Ultra's space heritage spans classified UK MoD Skynet military SATCOM payloads, for which Ultra supplied secure payload electronics including spread-spectrum transponders, anti-jam uplink processing, and nuclear-hardened TT&C (telemetry, tracking, and command) subsystems.

The company also supplied signal processing electronics for civilian programs including ESA's Swarm magnetic field measurement constellation and contributed to the Galileo navigation satellite ground segment signal generators. Ultra's secure communications technology was embedded in NATO satellite terminals and U.S. military MILSATCOM ground equipment under ITAR-controlled bilateral agreements. As part of Cobham, the space electronics capabilities integrate with Cobham's broader satellite antenna, microwave component, and SATCOM terminal portfolio to offer more complete solution stacks for defense satellite programs.

The Cobham acquisition and subsequent restructuring merged Ultra's Leicester and Portsmouth space electronics teams into Cobham's existing UK space business. Ultra Electronics had revenues of approximately £600M before acquisition across its six divisions. The space electronics segment specifically competed with Teledyne e2v, Spar Aerospace, and Leonardo DRS in the defense space electronics supply chain. Post-acquisition integration under Cobham's private equity owner Advent International (itself having acquired Cobham in 2020 for £4B) reflects the ongoing consolidation of the UK defense electronics supply chain.
