Unastella

Unastella (유나스텔라) is a Seoul, South Korea-based commercial space tourism and launch startup founded in 2022, positioning itself as South Korea's first private company developing manned suborbital spaceflight capabilities. The company's ambition is to build a suborbital rocket-powered vehicle carrying up to six passengers to altitudes above 100 km — past the Kármán line and into officially recognized space — using liquid-propellant engines burning kerosene (RP-1) and liquid oxygen (LOX), a propellant combination selected for its higher performance and established engineering heritage compared to solid or hybrid alternatives.

South Korea's emerging commercial space sector was energized by the successful first orbital flight of the fully indigenous Nuri (KSLV-II) rocket in June 2022 and the government's 2023 restructuring of space activities to encourage private sector participation alongside KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute). Unastella represents the aspirational ambition of Korean entrepreneurship to participate in the global commercial human spaceflight market pioneered by Blue Origin's New Shepard (suborbital passenger flights since 2021) and Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo program.

The technical challenge of developing a LOX/kerosene rocket capable of carrying passengers to 100 km and safely returning them is substantial — requiring turbopump-fed propulsion, precision guidance and control, abort systems certified for human spaceflight, and a recovery system (typically vertical propulsive landing or parachute return) for the crew vehicle.
