USRA

The Universities Space Research Association (USRA), headquartered in Columbia, Maryland and founded in 1969 under the auspices of the National Academy of Sciences, is a U.S. nonprofit research consortium with 121 member universities that conducts space science research, manages large NASA facilities, and builds research partnerships between government space programs and academic institutions.

USRA was established during the Apollo era with NASA's support to create an organizational model for managing large, multidisciplinary NASA research facilities through a consortium of universities — preserving academic openness and broad research community access while providing the management accountability and operational continuity that individual universities or pure government management could not easily achieve. This model proved successful and USRA has expanded to manage or contribute to numerous major NASA facilities and research centers.

USRA's facility management portfolio includes the Lunar and Planetary Institute (LPI) in Houston, Texas — a NASA-funded research institute providing lunar and planetary science resources, hosting major conferences (Lunar and Planetary Science Conference, LPSC), and archiving Apollo sample data and returned sample analysis; the SOFIA (Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy) science center during SOFIA operations; and contributions to the Quantum Artificial Intelligence Lab (QuAIL) — a joint initiative between USRA, NASA Ames Research Center, and Google that provides researchers with access to quantum computing hardware (D-Wave quantum annealers and gate-model quantum computers) for space-relevant optimization and machine learning problems.

USRA's research activities span astrobiology, planetary science, heliophysics, Earth science, and space medicine. The association administers postdoctoral fellowship programs placing early-career researchers at NASA centers, manages visiting scientist programs, and operates STEM education initiatives that engage K-12 students and underrepresented communities in space science careers. USRA's 121 member universities represent the U.S. research university community's collective investment in space science infrastructure.
