Utah State University Space Dynamics Lab

Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) is a University Affiliated Research Center (UARC) sponsored by the U.S. Space Force and affiliated with Utah State University. Founded in 1959, SDL focuses on providing mission engineering solutions to the military, science community, and industry, with core competencies in sensor development, satellite integration, and autonomous systems. The laboratory supports a broad range of applications, including multi-domain defense and space exploration.

SDL’s capabilities encompass the full lifecycle of space systems, from initial concept and design through to integration, testing, and on-orbit operations. Key technology areas include rendezvous, proximity operations, and docking technologies, as well as thermal management solutions and calibration/characterization expertise. They also emphasize modernization, reengineering, mission assurance, and cybersecurity.

Over its six-decade history, SDL has supported over 100 space missions, demonstrating a consistent record of successful project delivery. A notable achievement is the development of the SABER instrument, currently operating on the NASA TIMED satellite.
