Vandenberg Space Force Base

Vandenberg Space Force Base (VSFB), located near Lompoc on California's Central Coast at approximately 34.7°N latitude, is the United States' primary West Coast launch facility and the only U.S. launch site with unrestricted access to polar and sun-synchronous orbital inclinations — making it the preferred launch location for Earth observation, reconnaissance, weather, and GPS replenishment satellites that require coverage of all latitudes from pole to pole.

Established in 1941 as Camp Cooke (U.S. Army), converted to an Air Force ICBM testing range in 1957, and renamed Vandenberg Air Force Base (redesignated Vandenberg Space Force Base in 2021 when USSF assumed command), the installation spans 98,000 acres with approximately 25 miles of Pacific coastline enabling southward launches over open ocean without overflying populated areas.

This launch azimuth freedom — southward launches reaching polar orbits, southeast for sun-synchronous retrograde trajectories — is what distinguishes Vandenberg from Cape Canaveral, which is constrained to launches between 35° and 57° inclination to avoid overflying densely populated areas of the eastern United States and Caribbean.

Space Launch Complex 4 East (SLC-4E) is SpaceX's primary pad at Vandenberg and one of the busiest launch pads in the world — hosting dozens of Falcon 9 missions annually for Starlink polar shell replenishment, commercial Earth observation satellite deployments (Planet Labs, BlackSky, Maxar payloads), and NRO reconnaissance satellite launches. LZ-4 (Landing Zone 4) enables Falcon 9 first-stage booster recovery at Vandenberg. Space Launch Complex 3E hosts ULA's Atlas V launches of military and intelligence community payloads.

Vandenberg also hosts Rocket Lab's Launch Complex 2 (LC-2) for Electron small rockets serving the U.S. government market, and Space Launch Complex 6 (SLC-6) — the historic 'Slick 6' pad modified for Space Shuttle West Coast flights that were never flown — now repurposed for ULA's Vulcan Centaur heavy-lift vehicle.
