Quick Facts
About Venture Orbital Systems
Venture Orbital Systems is a Reims, France-based micro-launch startup founded in 2019 developing the Zephyr small launch vehicle targeting 50 kg to 500 km SSO at under €3M per launch. Venture is among a cluster of French commercial launch startups — alongside Latitude (formerly Ariane Group spinout), The Exploration Company, and Sirius Space — that emerged following ESA's push to support European commercial space access independent of the government Ariane and Vega programs. The Zephyr vehicle is designed as a two-stage liquid-fueled rocket using liquid oxygen and a bio-sourced kerosene alternative, drawing on propellant supply chain research to reduce launch costs. Venture has positioned itself as a dedicated rideshare competitor for European institutional and commercial satellite operators who prefer not to depend on U.S. Rocket Lab or SpaceX launches for strategic missions. The company is based at the Pôle Aerospace Champagne-Ardenne technology hub in Reims, giving it access to the broader French aerospace ecosystem including CNES technical partnerships and Bpifrance funding programs. Venture Orbital has received grants from Bpifrance and ESA Business Incubation Centre (BIC) programs and has conducted hot-fire tests of its Navier engine — a regeneratively cooled LOX/kerosene engine producing approximately 22 kN thrust. First orbital launch is targeted for the late 2020s, pending completion of propulsion qualification and range access negotiations. Venture competes in an increasingly crowded European micro-launch market where Rocket Factory Augsburg (RFA) and Isar Aerospace target the 500 kg to LEO segment, leaving the sub-100 kg niche to Venture and Latitude's Fontaine vehicle.
