An optical frequency comb (the technique awarded the 2005 Nobel Prize in Physics to John Hall and Theodor Hänsch) produces a laser output at precisely spaced frequencies resembling the teeth of a comb across a broad optical spectrum, creating an extraordinarily precise optical ruler for time and frequency measurement. When miniaturized and space-qualified, optical frequency combs enable atomic clocks orders of magnitude more stable than the rubidium and cesium microwave clocks currently operating in GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo satellites — potentially enabling future PNT (Positioning, Navigation, and Timing) constellations with centimeter-level positioning accuracy. Vescent has received NASA funding under its Space Technology Mission Directorate and DARPA contracts to develop radiation-hardened, space-qualified laser systems including the photonic components needed for portable optical frequency standards. The company also produces tunable laser controllers, electro-optic modulators, and precision photonics used in atomic physics research laboratories worldwide, providing commercial revenue alongside its strategic space and defense programs.
