About Visiona Tecnologia Espacial
Visiona Tecnologia Espacial, headquartered in São José dos Campos, Brazil, is a joint venture between Embraer Defense & Security (51%) and Telebras (49%) — established in 2012 to develop Brazil's indigenous satellite manufacturing capability and reduce the country's dependence on foreign satellite suppliers for the Brazilian national broadband satellite program and defense communications.
Visiona's creation was catalyzed by Brazil's need to develop the SGDC (Geostationary Defense and Strategic Communications Satellite) — a GEO satellite providing Ku-band broadband connectivity to Brazil's federalized schools, hospitals, and government offices in remote Amazon regions and Ka-band capacity for Brazilian armed forces secure communications. The SGDC-1 satellite was built by Thales Alenia Space in France under a technology transfer agreement that required Thales to train Brazilian engineers in satellite integration and testing — with Visiona providing the Brazilian industrial expertise, ground segment integration, and mission operations. SGDC-1 was launched in 2017 and provides 10 Gbps of capacity over Brazil.
Beyond SGDC-1, Visiona developed VCUB1 — Brazil's first domestically designed high-performance nanosatellite (a 6U cubesat) that demonstrated domestic microsatellite engineering capability through Visiona and partner university teams. The SatVHR (Satélite de Muito Alta Resolução) program is Visiona's ambition to develop Brazil's first indigenous very high resolution Earth observation satellite with 75 cm resolution — a capability that would give Brazil strategic independence in defense reconnaissance and civilian land use monitoring from foreign commercial EO satellites.
Visiona's dual-use mandate — serving both Telebras' civilian broadband programs and Brazilian military satellite requirements — positions it at the intersection of Brazil's civil and defense space programs, with ties to Brazil's space agency AEB (Agência Espacial Brasileira) and INPE (National Institute for Space Research) in São José dos Campos.
