About Vietnam Space Center
The Vietnam National Space Center (VNSC, Trung tâm Vũ trụ Việt Nam) is Vietnam's primary space research and development institution, established in 2006 under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) and headquartered in Hanoi, with a major facility campus in Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park. VNSC coordinates Vietnam's national space program, operates Earth observation satellites, develops remote sensing applications for domestic government agencies, and trains Vietnamese space engineers in collaboration with international partners.
VNSC's flagship achievement is the VNREDSat-1 (Vietnam Natural Resources, Environment and Disaster-monitoring Satellite), a 115 kg Earth observation satellite launched from Guiana Space Centre (Kourou) in 2013 aboard a Vega rocket. VNREDSat-1 was Vietnam's first nationally owned Earth observation satellite, providing 2.5 m panchromatic and 10 m multispectral imagery for land use mapping, disaster monitoring, and natural resources assessment across Vietnam's diverse terrain — from the Red River delta in the north through the Central Highlands to the Mekong Delta. The satellite was developed with technical assistance from EADS Astrium (now Airbus Defence and Space) and operated from VNSC's Hanoi ground station.
VNSC subsequently developed MicroDragon — a 50 kg microsat built as a joint project between VNSC and Japanese universities (Tohoku, Keio, University of Tokyo, Wakayama) under JAXA's JEM Small Satellite Orbital Deployer (J-SSOD) program — launched in 2019 from the ISS. MicroDragon monitors coastal water quality, fishery conditions, and chlorophyll-a concentration in Vietnamese coastal zones — directly applicable to Vietnam's fishing industry, which employs over 3 million people.
VNSC operates ground stations and remote sensing data processing centers for EO data exploitation by Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) agencies, agriculture monitoring under Ministry of Agriculture (MARD), and disaster assessment for Civil Defense. VNSC participates in ASEAN's regional space cooperation framework and APRSAF (Asia-Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum), and collaborates with JAXA, CNES, and ESA on capacity building. Vietnam's 2021 Space Technology Strategy targets an indigenous satellite manufacturing capability by 2030.
