For space applications, VZLU operates FOCAL-style thermal vacuum chambers (both small satellite-scale and larger spacecraft volume chambers) with the temperature ranges and vacuum levels required for satellite environmental qualification testing to ECSS standards. Clean integration facilities meeting ISO Class 7 and 8 requirements support satellite assembly and payload integration for CubeSats through microsatellites. These test services are available to Czech space companies and European customers seeking independent verification facilities outside the major national space agencies' infrastructure.

VZLU actively develops space technologies through its own satellite programs: the VZLUSAT constellation of CubeSats (VZLUSAT-1 launched 2017, VZLUSAT-2 in planning) serves as both technology demonstrators for Czech space components and test beds for novel sensor and propulsion technologies. VZLU's air-breathing ion thruster research explores the concept of using atmospheric gases (rather than stored propellant) as the ionizable propellant mass for electric propulsion in very low Earth orbits below 400 km, potentially enabling indefinitely propellant-free drag compensation if ion collection rates can match thruster consumption.

As a national research laboratory, VZLU serves Czech aerospace companies (PBS Velká Bíteš for engines, Jihlavan Airplanes) and contributes to ESA programs under Czech ESA membership. Czech Republic joined ESA in 2008 and has growing participation in satellite manufacturing supply chains and small launcher development through companies like CZUB and TUG.
