Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site

The Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site is China's newest and lowest-latitude operational spaceport, located near Wenchang on Hainan Island at approximately 19.6° N — significantly closer to the equator than China's inland launch sites at Jiuquan (40.6° N), Taiyuan (37.5° N), and Xichang (28.2° N). The lower latitude provides meaningful orbital mechanics advantages: rockets launching toward geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) benefit from Earth's equatorial rotational velocity, reducing the propellant needed to achieve GEO insertion, while polar and sun-synchronous launches can proceed over open ocean rather than populated inland territory.

Construction began in 2009 and the site conducted its first launch in June 2016 via the Long March 7. The facility was designed specifically for China's heavy-lift Long March 5 rocket — China's most capable operational launch vehicle at 25,000 kg to LEO — whose large 5-meter diameter core stage cannot be transported overland from the Tianjin factory complex. Hainan's coastal location enables the large stages to be sea-shipped from Tianjin, offloaded at Qinglan Harbor, and transported by road to the launch complex — a logistics chain analogous to NASA's barge transport of Saturn V stages.

Major missions launched from Wenchang include: the Tianhe core module (2021) and Wentian and Mengtian laboratory modules of the Chinese Space Station, the Chang'e-5 lunar sample return mission (2020, returned 1.7 kg of lunar regolith), Chang'e-6 far-side lunar sample return (2024), and the Tianwen-1 Mars orbiter/rover (2020). The facility also hosts the Long March 8 pad and is planned to support next-generation Long March 9 super-heavy-lift vehicle and crewed lunar mission launches.
