African Space Agency

Cairo, Egypt government

The African Space Agency (AfSA) is a continental space organisation established by the African Union to promote cooperation between the space policies of the AU's 55 member states. The AU adopted the African Space Policy and Strategy in 2016 and agreed upon the statute underlying AfSA in 2018. The African Union launched AfSA and inaugurated its headquarters at Egypt's Space City on the outskirts of New Cairo on 20 April 2025. Since Egypt launched Africa's first satellite in 1998, 18 African countries have launched 63 satellites.

Egyptian Space Agency

Cairo, Egypt government

The Egyptian Space Agency (EGSA), established by Presidential Decree in 2018 and headquartered in Cairo, is Egypt's national space agency responsible for developing and implementing Egypt's space strategy — including satellite development, operation, and applications; the development of a domestic space industry; and Egypt's representation in international space forums including the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) and the African space programs ecosystem. Egypt's space activity predates EGSA: Egypt launched its first Earth observation satellite, EgyptSat-1, in 2007 aboard a Ukrainian Dnepr rocket from Baikonur — a small 170 kg satellite built under a technology transfer agreement with Russia's Yuzhnoye Design Bureau. EgyptSat-2 followed in 2014, built in Egypt at the National Authority for Remote Sensing and Space Sciences (NARSS) with substantially greater domestic involvement, providing 1-meter panchromatic resolution Earth observation imagery for mapping, disaster monitoring, and urban planning. NARSS (founded 1971) remains a key operational partner of EGSA, managing Egypt's ground receiving stations and Earth observation data processing for agricultural monitoring along the Nile Delta, flood and drought mapping, archaeological site identification, and coastal change monitoring along Egypt's Mediterranean and Red Sea coastlines. Egypt's geopolitical position — at the intersection of Africa, the Middle East, and Europe — and its active satellite applications programs in these domains make it one of Africa's most significant space-using nations alongside South Africa, Nigeria, and Morocco. EGSA's strategic plan focuses on developing Egyptian satellite manufacturing capability, expanding from integrating foreign-supplied satellite buses to indigenous design of small and medium satellites. Egypt also pursues human spaceflight participation — Egyptian astronaut candidates have been identified — and is developing a national space policy that positions Egypt as a hub for African space cooperation under the African Union Space Policy framework.

NARSS

Cairo, Egypt government

The National Authority for Remote Sensing and Space Sciences (NARSS) is an Egyptian government body headquartered in Cairo, with a satellite receiving station in Aswan. It traces its origins to 1973, when it was created as the Egyptian Remote Sensing Center under a joint American-Egyptian project, and was formally reorganized as an authority under the Ministry of Scientific Research in 1994. NARSS has built and operated Egypt's first three Earth-observation satellites. EgyptSat 1, a 100-kilogram multispectral imaging satellite, launched in April 2007 and lost contact in July 2010. EgyptSat 2, built with Russia's RKK Energia, launched in April 2014 but was lost in April 2015 after a flight-control-system failure; its replacement, EgyptSat-A (also known as MisrSat-A), was jointly built by NARSS and RKK Energia, with imaging-payload components from Belarus's Peleng and NIRUP Geoinformation Systems, and launched from Baikonur in February 2019 as Egypt's third Earth remote-sensing satellite. NARSS uses its satellite imagery and ground infrastructure for environmental monitoring, agriculture, water-resource management and disaster response across Egypt. It now operates within the broader institutional framework of the Egyptian Space Agency (EgSA), created in 2018, but remains a distinct, separately founded organization with its own satellite-operations history predating EgSA by more than four decades. NARSS is state-funded and does not sell commercial imagery services at scale.

AQMAAR

Egypt startup

AQMAAR is described by Egypt's Space Agency (EgSA) as Egypt's first private-sector satellite manufacturer, developing modular satellite components and complete satellite systems under CEO Ahmed Nassar. In March 2025 the company signed a strategic cooperation protocol with EgSA giving it access to EgSA's Manufacturing, Assembly, Integration and Testing (MAIT) infrastructure for satellites up to 600 kg, part of a push to build domestic satellite-manufacturing capability in Egypt. AQMAAR's near-term roadmap centers on "swarm-oriented" satellite missions, starting with a 3U CubeSat demonstration mission planned for the fourth quarter of 2025 intended to validate its modular design approach ahead of future CubeSat platforms.
