India's Space Program: From Aryabhata to the Lunar South Pole
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has grown from a single Soviet-launched satellite in 1975 into a nation that has landed near the Moon's south pole, reached Mars on its first attempt, and is preparing to fly its own astronauts.

ISRO Founded
The Indian Space Research Organisation was established on August 15, 1969, succeeding the Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR), which physicist Dr. Vikram Sarabhai had set up in 1962 at the urging of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Placed under the newly formed Department of Space, ISRO was tasked with using space technology for national development -- communications, remote sensing, and eventually launch vehicles and planetary exploration.

Aryabhata: India’s First Satellite
Named after the 5th-century Indian astronomer, Aryabhata was India’s first satellite -- designed and built by ISRO, but launched by the Soviet Union under a cooperative agreement since India had no orbital launch vehicle of its own yet. A power system failure cut its scientific operations short, but the mission proved India could design and build a working spacecraft, laying the groundwork for an indigenous satellite program.

PSLV Becomes Operational
The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle debuted on September 20, 1993, but an attitude-control fault caused a stage collision and the payload failed to reach orbit. The very next flight, in October 1994, succeeded, and PSLV went on to become ISRO’s most reliable workhorse. As of early 2026 it had flown 63 missions with 58 full successes, one partial failure and four outright failures -- a record that made it the vehicle of choice for Chandrayaan-1, the Mars Orbiter Mission, and dozens of foreign satellite launch contracts.

Chandrayaan-1: First Lunar Probe
India’s first mission beyond Earth orbit carried 11 instruments from India and international partners including NASA and ESA. Its Moon Impact Probe detected signs of water during descent in November 2008, and NASA’s Moon Mineralogy Mapper aboard the orbiter confirmed water molecules across the lunar surface in 2009 -- a discovery that reshaped scientific understanding of lunar resources. Contact was lost in August 2009 after 312 days, but ISRO judged the mission a success, having completed roughly 95% of its objectives.

Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan)
Launched November 5, 2013 and inserted into Mars orbit on September 24, 2014, the Mars Orbiter Mission made India the first Asian nation to reach Mars, and only the fourth space agency to do so at all, after the Soviet program, NASA and ESA. Built for roughly ₹450 crore (about $73 million), it remains one of the least expensive interplanetary missions ever flown. It also succeeded on its very first attempt at Mars -- a feat previously managed only by the multinational European Space Agency, making it the first single nation’s mission to succeed on a maiden try. ISRO lost contact with the spacecraft in 2022 after its propellant was exhausted, roughly seven years past its planned six-month mission.

GSLV Mk III / LVM3 Debuts
India’s heaviest launch vehicle first flew as a suborbital experimental mission on December 18, 2014, testing atmospheric re-entry of a crew-module prototype (CARE). Its first fully orbital flight came June 5, 2017, carrying the GSAT-19 communications satellite. Capable of lifting about 10 tonnes to low Earth orbit and 4.2 tonnes to geosynchronous transfer orbit, the rocket -- since renamed LVM3 -- launched Chandrayaan-3 to the Moon in 2023 and is being human-rated for the crewed Gaganyaan program.

Chandrayaan-2
Chandrayaan-2 launched July 22, 2019 carrying an orbiter, the Vikram lander, and the Pragyan rover. The orbiter reached lunar orbit successfully and remains operational today, but Vikram deviated from its intended trajectory about 2.1 km above the surface during its September 6, 2019 landing attempt and crashed. A failure analysis pointed to a software issue combined with higher-than-expected engine thrust. The lessons learned directly shaped the redesign that made Chandrayaan-3 successful four years later.

Gaganyaan Uncrewed Test Campaign
Ahead of Gaganyaan’s crewed flights, ISRO ran a series of uncrewed qualification tests: the Crew Module Atmospheric Re-entry Experiment (CARE) on December 18, 2014, verified re-entry aerodynamics and the heat shield; a pad abort test on July 5, 2018, demonstrated the crew escape system firing directly off the launch pad; and Test Vehicle Abort Mission-1 (TV-D1) on October 21, 2023, fired an abort motor at Mach 1.2 to simulate an in-flight emergency, successfully separating and recovering the crew module by parachute in the Bay of Bengal. An uncrewed orbital test, Gaganyaan-1, carrying the humanoid robot Vyommitra, has slipped past its original late-2025 target.

Chandrayaan-3: Historic South Pole Landing
Chandrayaan-3 launched July 14, 2023, and on August 23, 2023 at 18:04 IST its Vikram lander touched down at Statio Shiv Shakti near the lunar south pole (69°S, 32°E) -- the first spacecraft in history to soft-land in that region, and only the fourth national space program, after the Soviet Union, the United States and China, to achieve any soft lunar landing. The Pragyan rover explored the surface for about two weeks before lander and rover entered planned hibernation as the two-week lunar night set in; they did not wake as hoped, but the mission had already met its objectives. India now marks the landing anniversary, August 23, as National Space Day.

Aditya-L1 Reaches Solar Orbit
India’s first dedicated solar observatory launched September 2, 2023 and, after a 126-day journey, entered a halo orbit around the Sun-Earth Lagrange Point 1 on January 6, 2024. From that vantage point, clear of eclipses, Aditya-L1 continuously observes the solar corona, solar wind and magnetic storms with seven instruments. It has since recorded major solar flares and coronal mass ejections and released tens of terabytes of data to researchers studying how solar activity affects Earth’s magnetosphere.

NISAR: NASA-ISRO Radar Satellite
NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar) pairs a NASA L-band radar with an ISRO S-band radar on a single satellite, making it one of the most capable Earth-observation missions ever built. It launched July 30, 2025 aboard a GSLV F16 -- the rocket’s first flight to a Sun-synchronous polar orbit -- and was declared fully operational in January 2026. NISAR maps ground and ice deformation, soil moisture and vegetation biomass worldwide roughly every 12 days, with data shared freely for disaster response and climate research.

Gaganyaan: First Crewed Flight
Gaganyaan will be India’s first crewed orbital spaceflight, carrying Indian astronauts -- called Vyomanauts -- in a roughly 5.3-tonne capsule launched on a human-rated LVM3. Four Indian Air Force test pilots were named astronaut-designates in February 2024; one of them, Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, gained early spaceflight experience by flying to the International Space Station on Axiom Mission 4 in June 2025, becoming only the second Indian in space. Originally targeted for 2021, the program has slipped through pandemic delays, supply-chain issues and the demands of indigenous life-support development. An uncrewed orbital test (Gaganyaan-1), carrying the humanoid robot Vyommitra, is expected to precede the crewed flight, which is now planned for no earlier than 2027.

A Frugal Program with Global Reach
ISRO is known for "frugal engineering": the Mars Orbiter Mission cost about $73 million, and Chandrayaan-3 an estimated $75 million -- a fraction of comparable Western missions. That cost efficiency, paired with the reliable PSLV, has made ISRO a launch provider of choice for smaller nations, with commercial arm NewSpace India Limited (NSIL) having launched satellites for dozens of countries.
India also partners directly with other agencies: NISAR (2025) is a joint mission with NASA, Chandrayaan-2's orbiter carried NASA instrumentation, and astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla trained with NASA and SpaceX ahead of his 2025 Axiom Mission 4 flight to the ISS -- experience ISRO is drawing on as it prepares Gaganyaan. India's Artemis Accords signature in 2023 also ties its lunar ambitions to the same international framework guiding NASA's Artemis program.
