A Transylvanian Saxon physicist whose 1923 book "The Rocket into Interplanetary Space" and 1929 sequel worked out the theory of liquid-fueled multi-stage rockets and laid out the conditions needed for human spaceflight. He helped found Germany's VfR rocketry society in 1927, where a young Wernher von Braun was among his students, and later worked alongside von Braun on the V-2 program during the Second World War and briefly at NASA in the 1950s-60s.
