Aegiq
Aegiq is a Sheffield, UK quantum photonics company founded from the University of Sheffield's Quantum Photonics Lab, developing integrated quantum photonic chips for quantum key distribution (QKD) satellite communications and quantum networking applications. The company's core technology is a deterministic single-photon source based on self-assembled InAs quantum dots — semiconductor nanostructures that emit exactly one photon per excitation pulse, enabling the quantum-mechanical security guarantees of QKD that are impossible to achieve with attenuated laser sources used by most commercial QKD systems today. Deterministic single-photon emission eliminates the multi-photon vulnerability (the photon-number-splitting attack) that limits the secure key rate and operating distance of laser-based QKD systems. A satellite-based QKD terminal using deterministic single-photon sources would extend secure key distribution to intercontinental distances — beyond the reach of fiber-based QKD networks — enabling truly global quantum-secure communication infrastructure.
