Catalyx Space

Catalyx Space is a San Francisco-based startup, founded in 2024 by co-founder and CEO Rifath Shaarook (previously known for developing KalamSat, reported as one of the smallest satellites ever flown, as a teenager), building a satellite bus called Cosmotron and a reentry cargo capsule called ReX intended to bring payloads back from low Earth orbit. The company is also building a manufacturing facility in Ahmedabad, India, and describes its broader goal as making it easier to deploy manufacturing, communications and materials-science applications in space through a standardized backend. The company has flown hardware already: its first spacecraft launched with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) carrying two customer payloads, and it has tested a version of its ReX reentry capsule via an airplane drop test. A second, larger spacecraft launch was planned for around December 2025-January 2026, with a roughly 100-kilogram spacecraft launch planned for later in 2026. Catalyx's combination of an early ISRO-launched satellite bus and a reentry-capsule product places it among a small group of young companies, alongside firms like Germany's ATMOS Space Cargo, pursuing low-cost, frequent return-from-orbit capability rather than one-way satellite deployment alone.

Lux Aeterna

Lux Aeterna is developing fully reusable satellites — spacecraft with a heat shield that survive atmospheric re-entry, land, and fly again with new payloads. The approach inverts the usual economics of satellites as expendable assets, and is aimed at customers who want hardware returned for inspection, refurbishment or rapid iteration rather than left to burn up. The company was founded in August 2024 by Brian Taylor, previously an engineer at SpaceX, and is based in Denver. Its first vehicle, Delphi, is roughly 1.1 metres across and weighs about 200 kilograms; a Delphi-1 demonstration flight is planned for early 2027 on a SpaceX Transporter rideshare, carrying payloads up and back down. Lux Aeterna raised a $10 million seed round led by Konvoy with Decisive Point, Cubit Capital and Wave Function participating, bringing total funding to about $14 million. The team of roughly 14 is expected to reach about 25 before the Delphi-1 flight, with the company projecting tens of satellites in operation by 2030.

MaiaSpace

The vehicle is autonomous and deliberately rocket-agnostic, so it can fly on whichever launcher is available rather than being tied to one provider, and the company is targeting better mission economics than the growing field of re-entry vehicles. The company was founded in 2024 by Jamie France, previously Rocket Lab's global director for the Electron launch vehicle, and is based in Auckland. If it flies as planned it would be New Zealand's first re-entry vehicle — a capability distinct from the launch expertise the country is already known for. Outlier raised a US$7.35 million pre-seed round led by Global From Day One, with Nova Threshold, Airtree, Icehouse Ventures, Investible, Side Stage Ventures and Brian Cartmell participating. Its target customers are in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, advanced materials and scientific research, and a debut mission is scheduled for 2028.

CosmoCourse is a Moscow-based Russian private space company founded in 2014 with an ambitious goal of developing a fully reusable suborbital tourism vehicle capable of carrying six space tourists to altitudes above 200 km — significantly higher than the Kármán line at 100 km and well above competitors Blue Origin's New Shepard (approximately 105 km) and Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo (approximately 86 km) — offering a longer microgravity experience and deeper black sky views at a target price around $200,000–$250,000 per seat. CosmoCourse's design concept centers on a two-stage system: a reusable booster stage powered by liquid oxygen / liquified natural gas (LOX/LNG) engines returns to the launch pad via propulsive landing (similar to SpaceX's Falcon 9 first stage), while a detachable passenger capsule with windows for each of the six occupants follows a separate trajectory and lands softly using parachutes and solid retrograde motors. The LOX/LNG propellant combination was selected for its non-toxic handling (unlike hypergolic propellants) and compatibility with existing Russian infrastructure and industrial supply chains. Founder and CEO Pavel Pushkin, a Russian aerospace engineer, secured initial interest from Russian private investors and began technical design work. The company applied to Russian aviation and space regulators (Roscosmos, Rosaviatsiya) for development permits and conducted preliminary design studies, generating significant Russian media coverage as one of the country's first genuinely private space ventures independent of Roscosmos. A planned launch site was studied at Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. However, CosmoCourse's development repeatedly ran aground on funding difficulties in Russia's constrained private capital markets, where aerospace investment appetite was limited and regulatory processes for private launch vehicles were undefined. Progress stalled through 2019-2021. Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine and subsequent international sanctions further isolated the company from potential international investment partnerships and eliminated the Western tourist market (which represented the primary potential customer base) effectively terminating commercial viability for the foreseeable future.
