Vietnam Space Center

Hanoi, Vietnam government

The Vietnam National Space Center (VNSC, Trung tâm Vũ trụ Việt Nam) is Vietnam's primary space research and development institution, established in 2006 under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) and headquartered in Hanoi, with a major facility campus in Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park. VNSC coordinates Vietnam's national space program, operates Earth observation satellites, develops remote sensing applications for domestic government agencies, and trains Vietnamese space engineers in collaboration with international partners. VNSC's flagship achievement is the VNREDSat-1 (Vietnam Natural Resources, Environment and Disaster-monitoring Satellite), a 115 kg Earth observation satellite launched from Guiana Space Centre (Kourou) in 2013 aboard a Vega rocket. VNREDSat-1 was Vietnam's first nationally owned Earth observation satellite, providing 2.5 m panchromatic and 10 m multispectral imagery for land use mapping, disaster monitoring, and natural resources assessment across Vietnam's diverse terrain — from the Red River delta in the north through the Central Highlands to the Mekong Delta. The satellite was developed with technical assistance from EADS Astrium (now Airbus Defence and Space) and operated from VNSC's Hanoi ground station. VNSC subsequently developed MicroDragon — a 50 kg microsat built as a joint project between VNSC and Japanese universities (Tohoku, Keio, University of Tokyo, Wakayama) under JAXA's JEM Small Satellite Orbital Deployer (J-SSOD) program — launched in 2019 from the ISS. MicroDragon monitors coastal water quality, fishery conditions, and chlorophyll-a concentration in Vietnamese coastal zones — directly applicable to Vietnam's fishing industry, which employs over 3 million people. VNSC operates ground stations and remote sensing data processing centers for EO data exploitation by Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) agencies, agriculture monitoring under Ministry of Agriculture (MARD), and disaster assessment for Civil Defense. VNSC participates in ASEAN's regional space cooperation framework and APRSAF (Asia-Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum), and collaborates with JAXA, CNES, and ESA on capacity building. Vietnam's 2021 Space Technology Strategy targets an indigenous satellite manufacturing capability by 2030.

VinSpace JSC

Hanoi, Vietnam commercial

VinSpace JSC, founded in November 2024 and headquartered in Vietnam, is a Vietnamese aerospace venture focused on spacecraft manufacturing, aviation technology, and satellite communications — established with VND 300 billion (approximately $12 million USD) in initial capital and backed by Pham Nhat Vuong, Vietnam's wealthiest individual and founder of Vingroup, the country's largest private conglomerate spanning real estate, automotive (VinFast), healthcare, education, and technology sectors. VinSpace represents Vietnam's ambition to develop indigenous commercial space industry capability beyond the government satellite programs that have previously defined the country's space activities. Vietnam National Space Center (VNSC, established 2011) has operated LOTUSat-1 and LOTUSat-2 Earth observation satellites built with Japanese JAXA technical assistance, providing a foundation of orbital knowledge but limited domestic manufacturing capability. VinSpace's private capital entry aims to accelerate commercial development. The Vingroup backing is strategically significant: Pham Nhat Vuong's resources and diversified industrial platform (VinFast electric vehicle manufacturing, Vinhomes real estate, Vinpearl hospitality) provide VinSpace with access to manufacturing expertise, supply chain relationships, and financial stability that independent aerospace startups rarely possess. VinFast's electric vehicle and battery technology capabilities have potential aerospace applications in propulsion and power systems. Vietnam's geographic location — tropical latitude with Pacific Ocean access — provides potential future launch site advantages for equatorial LEO deployment, though the country currently lacks launch infrastructure. VinSpace's initial focus on spacecraft manufacturing and satellite communications allows capability building without launch vehicle investment, leveraging international launch providers while developing the technical workforce and industrial base for more ambitious future programs. The company competes in the broader Asian commercial space manufacturing sector alongside Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand emerging space companies.
